A step towards employee stability and well-being in the cleaning industry

A broadly supported agreement

On December 6, agreement was reached on the renewal of the collective agreement for unionized employees covered by the Décret sur le personnel d'entretien d'édifices publics de la région de Montréal. This agreement avoids a labor dispute in the janitorial industry that would have affected a key sector of the Quebec economy.

With 69% employee approval at the general assemblies held in Montreal and Gatineau, this collective agreement reflects a solid consensus between the parties. More than 550 employees took part in these meetings, demonstrating the importance of this initiative for workers in the industry.

In the janitorial sector, where socio-economic challenges and quality requirements are omnipresent, this announcement augurs well for a steady improvement in working conditions over the next six years. A considerable turning point in an industry known for offering physically demanding jobs, irregular hours and low wages.

Significant gains for employees

Key changes include:

  • A total salary increase of 20.5% over six years, with an initial adjustment of 6.62% on November 1, 2025.

  • A progressive night premium, reaching $1.00 per hour by 2028.

  • Improvements to benefits, including two new floating vacations (in 2026 and 2028) and changes to vacation entitlements.

These measures take into account the gap between the increase in the consumer price index (CPI) and previous wage increases, thus making up for disparities and adjusting workers' incomes to current economic realities.

A win-win agreement

Despite ambitious initial union demands (over 80% for 4 years), the agreement reached is considered fair. AESEQ contractors recognize that this collective agreement will enable them to maintain quality services, thanks to a qualified workforce benefiting from excellent working conditions.

An exemplary negotiation process

The outcome of this agreement is the result of intensive negotiation work, involving nearly 30 sessions since last May. The contribution of conciliator Karine Lavoie was decisive in finding common ground in this complex context.

Positive impacts

This new collective agreement reinforces the stability of services essential to maintaining the public buildings' cleanliness standards. By guaranteeing better working conditions for employees, contractors can continue to meet the high expectations of their customers, thus contributing to the well-being of occupants and the sustainability of services.

A promising future

This agreement marks an important milestone for the Quebec janitorial industry. It underscores the importance of valuing the work of employees while ensuring stable, quality services.

Valuing these trades is crucial. Not only for the well-being of employees, but also to ensure the sustainability of the essential services they provide. By strengthening working conditions and offering tangible benefits, the aim is to restore a balance between the unalterable demand for janitorial services and the ability to attract and, above all, retain qualified, motivated workers.
